Webinar 9/14/2010: Single-search access to your library's resources through WorldCat Local

KD opinion: seems like they are focusing on the local index and ease of fulfillment. these areas look like they might work really, really well (especially nice to see holdings for book locally, consortially, and in worldcat/ill all at once), but I suspect that the databases that are only accessible through metasearch may get short shrift. The webinar didn't talk much about that part of the system or show it in action (that I noticed). Not sure how it would combine results with the ones from the local index.

Cheryl Snowden, Product Manager, WorldCat Local

Notes:
  • Operates at network level (what's this mean - hosted at OCLC, not on a locally-maintained server?)
  • Questions they hear the most:
    • How can we make it easy for users to
      • find things?
      • obtain things once they identify
  • Vision [didn't get this written down]
  • Steps toward vision
    • Open WorldCat - make library materials findable on open web
    • WorldCat.org - freely available searching, get it from your local library
    • WorldCat Local - Customized for local users - bridges gap between finding it and getting it.
  • Single-search access
    • Find it
      • local cat
      • group cat
      • e-resources
      • digital collections
      • 3rd party dbs
    • Get it
      • local systems
      • resource sharing
      • e-delivery (SFX, etc)
  • how can we help users FIND ALL of our physical, electronic, and digital materials?
    • putting oclc articles and a metasearch application together in one search box
    • they've put a priority on making OCLC resources all searchable through one interface
    • CSA EBSCO WILSON JSTOR also searchable through WorldCat Local
  • Simplify access across formats and collections
    • give them one place to start - don't have to figure out where to search
  • How WorldCat Local Single search works
    • Central index
      • opac through holdings in worldcat
      • oclc licensed content (what?)
      • non-oclc licensed content (EBSCO, Wilson, etc.?)
    • If can't get contracts to centrally index
      • metasearch through Z39.50
  • Benefits of single-search access
    • simple, integrated access
    • discovery of more resources
    • local resources featured in search results (your stuff first, consortia & other libraries next)
    • includes enriched content such as cover art
  • how can we make it easy for people to get the things they need?

    • in worldcat local: offer different options at one point
  • personal profile for users
    • lists
    • citations
    • tagging
    • saved searches
  • how can we put our library resources where our users are?
    • worldcat.org aggregates web searches & sends traffic back to libraries.
    • Google Books: "Find in a Library" takes you to worldcat.org
      • if you have worldcat local, it will ask users if they would like to switch to your worldcat local installation
    • Custom WorldCat Local search box on any website
    • Worldcat widgets (HTML snippets that give you search boxes or lists)
    • mobile apps
      • beta of worldcat local mobile

          • branding - banner, logo, colors, chat widget integration.
          • things held by the library are displayed first
            • users can change sort to relevance
              • or you can use relevance as default search
